Why? Because some collectors don't work on "market value" or
"retail price." They are not buying for investment or
resale. They want a particular poster for some personal reason and are
willing to pay whatever it takes to get it. If two of that type of
collector with deep pockets happen to stumble upon the same auction and
both of them decide "This is the one..." then you get your classic bidding war
where retail value is thrown out the window. Technically, this phenom is also
referred to as the seller having a really good day.
The bid histories of both these auctions don't look like
shill bidding to me, but seem to have been a genuine bidding war between two
gotta-have-it collectors. Although I must agree that in both cases I can't
understand why *anyone* would gotta-have either one of these
items (particularly at those prices). I've said it before... some people
have entirely too much money on their hands.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] why did this poster sell for so
much? Amazing. Similarly astounding was
the sale on Bruce's site last week for the LC #1, in lesser condition,
for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?". Scene is nothing all that unusual,
had Bette Davis standing with hands on hips, Joan Crawford in wheelchair, both
facing camera. Went for $355!! I thought I might pick it up
for $10-$15. Go figure!
