I meant what I said about not posting to MOPO for the time being... but people
keep sending me private messages (of all kinds) and since, like everyone else,
I want this to be over, I really don't want to keep writing about it privately.
So, let me try to address the private questions and suggestions -- both those
which were well-intentioned and those which were less than friendly. I'll keep
it short this time:
Do any of you really think it was Susan Olson's childish little taunts that
really bothered me... even a little? No way. I've been flamed by real pros. She
doesn't even qualify as a talented amateur. That's why I simply ignored her.
What hurt was Scott not only failing to support his rules, or even publicly
reprimand Susan, but actually deciding to lump me in with her on equal terms in
his publicly-posted "friendly reminder" in such a way as to indicate that I was
as much responsible for Susan's freak-out as she was. Other people on this list
seemed to think this was somehow a "fair" thing to do... you know, it's good
form to publicly chastise "both sides" -- except, people, there was only ONE
side, since I had said *nothing* while Susan ranted on, message after message!
In effect, Scott publicly rebuked me for *not* engaging in a shouting match
with her!
Read that sentence again. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that
picture?
Then there was the fact while she was ranting on and on that *none* of the
long-timers or Big Wheels on MOPO stepped up to the plate (either then or
during the next 3 days) to even offer her a mild rebuke -- even through she
kept sending post after post to the group, flooding MOPO with her rants while I
sat silently, not saying a word. I'm not saying anyone should publicly have
said "You're right, JR" -- but, aside from Andrea, there was not even one
single public comment along the lines of "Susan, this is not appropriate
behavior" or "We really don't appreciate this kind of language on MOPO, Susan"
Not one! Not even any expression of "Why are you flooding MOPO with these
messages... this isn't good for the list... why don't you just drop it?"
Interesting to note, however, that after I finally sent my ONE and ONLY
response on the whole mess that there were plenty of people who did say exactly
that to me -- both publicly and privately. Everyone has no trouble asking me
"Why don't you just let it drop, JR... talking about this isn't good for the
list..." But no one said anything like that to Susan when she was going on and
on in her attacks. What's up with that double standard?
This blatant hypocrisy on both Scott's part and MOPO as a group has disgusted
me and left me with a bad taste in my mouth that I have found hard to wash
away, no matter how many beers I drink or what angle I try to look at the
situation from. Perhaps I actually owe Susan a word of thanks for showing me
that I've been wasting my time here all these years? There's no doubt in my
mind that if she had been attacking Kirby the way she was me... or Freeman...
or Sue Heim... or even Bruce... with 5 consecutive, vicious, foul-mouthed and
abusive public messages in 24 hours... that there would have been plenty of
people publicly expressing their disapproval. But since she was attacking me,
no one but Andrea felt moved to say one damn thing about her behavior publicly.
So, let's me make it clear folks: Those were the things that tore it for me
with MOPO -- not Susan's pitiful little school yard insults. It was getting
hung out to dry by Scott and the rest of the "community" when all I did was
refuse to engage her in a public shouting match -- that is what soured me on
MOPO. So... for now I'm done with it and the whole bad joke called the "movie
poster community"... probably for good... only time will tell.
