I was very saddened to see on the Internet that Leonard Schrader has just
passed away. Len was an excellent screenwriter (over-shadowed by his more
famous brother Paul, who he sometime worked with), and you can find his
accomplishments at Imdb.com
But Len also had a MASSIVE love of lobby cards, especially the unheralded early
silent directors, ones who were huge in their day, but had been forgotten over
time. Back in the days when I would issue sales catalogs, I would know that he
would be one of the first to call if I had any l obscure silent cards that he
had not yet been able to track down. It was completely obvious he collected
entirely out of love, and not any sense of investment.
He was one of the kindest and most down to earth "celebrities" I have ever
encountered, and we had many long conversations where I would ask him to
educate me about the early directors (information on them is hard to find
anywhere) and he was always happy to talk about what he loved so much.
In recent years I have been receiving fewer and fewer silent lobby cards, and
so I sold little to Len, but every so often one of my employees would say to
me, "There's a Len Schrader on the phone and he wonders if you aren't too busy
to talk to him". Len was that kind of guy, and I am sure he will be much missed
by many in our hobby.
