Yes, Richard, this is canny observation, and one that I think is
probably correct.
I must say, too, that BREWSTER MCCLOUD is never mentioned among his
great or even
better films, but it is a guilty pleasure for me. It's such a baby-
boomer counterculture
piece. And the fact that it was filmed in Houston at the height of
the LSD era in Texas
resonates with old Texas hippies. It's amazing to see the Houston
that existed in the 1970s
in that film -- there is so much location shooting. Believe me, you
wouldn't recognize that
place as Houston today.
A friend who was on the set of that movie said that Altman was so
taken with Shelly Duvall's
kooky apartment in Houston that he ordered one reconstructed exactly
inside the Astrodome for
shooting the film -- and it became the apartment for Duvall's
character in the film. If this is
true, and I have no reason to doubt it, it is illustrative of the
genius of Altman -- to take what
he found and make art of it.
I will miss him.
All you Americans, have a good Thanksgiving. The rest of you, to
paraphrase John Lennon,
can rattle your bling bling.
