Hi Mike

Daybills are as popular as ever - over 2000 sales in the last 12 months would attest to that. The rare titles continue to command high prices and be very desirable but the more commonly found posters are going for much lower prices. The print quality on some of the older titles was at times exceptional. The fact that the paper was thinner has little bearing on the quality of the print and some of the hand lithos or Marchant posters were very striking but, as Vesna says, there are some shockers. The artists from the 60s who worked for Robert Burton would often trace or copy US pressbooks or posters and they would come up with very crude looking posters with, at times, some laughable images eg one or two John Wayne daybills where you would be hard pressed recognising him.

The images are always important and daybills are generally more desirable when the artwork is different to other versions eg The Blue Dahlia which is a quite unique hand litho poster. If the image is similar to the US version the desirability and value does seem to decrease. Perhaps Chinatown is a good example. The Amsel art is often preferred and the daybill and Australian one sheet are always popular. Another title with alternative art is the Halloween daybill.

I have a number of customers who only collect daybills and they are not all in Australia. One or two of them are focused on finding certain titles or genres and they have huge collections of exclusively Australian posters.

Dealers and collectors are still finding collections and when they do turn up they often contain large numbers of posters including US and European posters that seemed to find their way to Australia. I still find it exciting when soemthing turns up although it always seems to involve travelling hundreds of miles to some remote country town and then trying to find a way of getting everything back home.

As to reprints, I havent heard of any apart from one or two titles like the Day the Earth Stood Still reissue that a dealer on eBay is selling. Last time I saw he was clearly describing them as reprints and he was also reprinting US and European titles.

Regards
John

Subject: [MOPO] Collectibility of Australian Daybills

Morning everyone,

Considering no one bothered to reply to my last question of whether there are any reprinted Australian Daybills, I thought I would ask another question.

I am curious to hear your thoughts on the collectibility of Australian Daybills - how desirable are they and for which titles in particular. Being mostly an insert collector myself, I really like how the more desirable U.S. one-sheet images are used for the 13x30 daybills such as the Brando red-silouette international image used for the The Godfather, the German Amsel image used for Chinatown, the chase image from Butch Cassidy, the Peel art from Taxi Driver, etc. I suppose the only down-side is the poor print and paper quality when compared to the U.S. material.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
Mike
