You guys are correct about the date span. However, having watched every Oscar
telecast since 1964, there have been numerous occasions whereby alterations
have been made at the last minute to make room for titanic news events or to
acknowledge a recent passing. Last night was the first time I could recall an
"In Memoriam" segment that had a widely publicized "cut-off" date. It doesn't
alter the fact that the passing of notable celebrities most recent -- will loom
largest in the minds of movie fans and especially their friends and families.
And Roy was definitely on my mind last night.

2007-Jan 31, 2008. scheider died on feb 10th... so he will be in next year's

Still too swamped to get into all of the debates -- but most of the posts I've
read thus far have pretty covered everything. But I can wait no longer for
someone to step forward to bring up what was, in my view, a more egregious
omission. While people go on about Renfro or others left out from the Oscar
"in memoriam" segment -- what about Roy Scheider? The annual "Memoriam"
segments traditionally include all notable motion picture-related deaths right
up to the ceremony itself. Frankly, if I was on the Academy's Board, I'd be
just as, if not more embarrassed trying to explain how Roy was overlooked. The
man was nominated for Best Actor (1979) and Supporting Actor (1971) in his
career. It shouldn't have been too hard to get last-minute digital clips of
his appearances in "Jaws," "The French Connection" and "All That Jazz." I'm
sure it was a mistake, but still quite egregious... -kuz.
