Didn't send my post to the whole group. Sorry, Ira OK -- So I just reread the original post. You wanted info on DVD Recorders not about Blu Ray vs HD.... I would say that if you have a Blu-Ray system, than yes you should get the recorder, but ONLY if you are watching your TV shows in HD. Even then, all the TV networks are not broadcasting in true HD. 1080p. It is more like 720p. Only the Blu-Ray physical disk can deliver content in 1080p. So if you are taping HD content at 720, it will look great. But it won't be the true experience. But only a real pro will tell the difference. My suggestion would be to wait on the DVD recorder ones for awhile. Let the price drop. Now ---- Back to my other long post about the war..... Ira +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As someone who fought the Blu-Ray/ HD DVD battle and won, here is my advice. : ) Yes the war is over. Walmart, NETFLIX, Best Buy have all dropped HD DVD. Toshiba has thrown in the towel. It's over. Anyone saying it isn't is kidding themselves. The big question is will it matter in the end anyway. Some people argue that people will start downloading or via PPV/on demand on home tv in HD soon enough. Who needs physical disks. Most people over 25 still want a physical disk. But like the Music Industry, the same thing will happen in the film industry. (Example, in Korea, where Bandwidth is FAR FASTER than here in the US, the film industry has a very VERY small DVD business. It's all piracy via online sharing of movies.) Europe also has a high rate of piracy because of the broad based usage of the DIVX codec in all DVD players. (Think MP3 for movies instead of music and that is DIVX). Anyway, enough depression about my future. It will be awhile, but believe me the DVD business will come crashing to it's knees. So if you want a Blu-Ray player, you should get the PS3. Why? Because not only is it the cheapest one out there. But it is also the most POWERFUL. You see, in the near future with Blu-Ray Profile 2.0, which is a IP Enabled Networked player. You will start to have content downloaded that is associated with the Blu-Ray Disc. So say you pop in Spider-man 1, and Spider-man 4 is about to come out. You will have the new trailer for Spider--man 4 pushed to your Blu-Ray player. You may also get some other stuff from Spider-Man 4. Or maybe there is a NEW director's commentary on Spider-Man 1, that also can be pushed down. Or deleted scenes, you get the idea. No more will putting in an old disc make you feel you are stuck in time because you are seeing trailers from when the disc was released. You will see trailers based on WHEN you play the disc. And more than likely, what other type of films do you already like to watch. On the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS BD Disk, you actually have all 3 versions of the film. You can pick and choose as you are watching it what version to watch. On most BD Disks you can book mark your favorite scenes of that disk and the Blu-Ray player REMEMBERS them all. There are also going to be multiplayer games. Trivia games to play against your friends as you watch the movie. You will be able to sync up playing the movie, etc... I am sure there will Internet applications that will feed off of your player, store you library of what you last played, share with friends, etc.... So all this new stuff that is coming takes IP Enabled Machine, Computer Processing Power, Memory and Hard Disk Storage. Something the PlayStation 3 has. I believe there are reviews in Audio and Video magazines that say the PS3 has the best image/sound because of the processing. Lastly, the PS3 is UPDATEABLE via the network. Profile 2.0, will lead to 3.0 and 4.0 down the road. You don't want to get stuck with a machine that can't update because it doesn't have the processing power, memory or storage. The new 2.0 profile machines coming out this summer will have some of this. But none will be greater than the Playstation 3. You should spend the extra money on the PlayStation 3 DVD Remote. That way you don't have to use the Game Control to Pause, Play, etc.... Finally, pick up a game. You will enjoy yourself. I highly recommend Guitar Hero or Rock Band. There are other games out there, but it all depends on your speed and what you like to do. Good luck, Ira
