HERITAGE VINTAGE MOVIE POSTERS SIGNATURE AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS
The Heritage Vintage Movie Poster Signature Auction is just around the corner
(March 11 & 12, in Dallas, Texas and online at www.HA.com<http://www.HA.com>),
and we want to take this opportunity to draw your attention to a few
outstanding pieces. These are posters that we feel definitely deserve your
attention, as they would make important additions to any collection. As always,
your comments on these selections are more than welcome. If you haven't yet
discovered the joys of collecting foreign movie paper, perhaps these few
examples will whet your appetite:

The Lady From Shanghai<http://www.ha.com/693*64323&type=prte-pr022908a>
(Columbia, 1947). Italian 4 - Folio (55" X 78"):
ESTIMATE: $20,000 - $40,000
Although the American paper for this film is extremely attractive, this Italian
4-folio, with art by noted poster artist Anselmo Ballester, is even more exotic
and intriguing. Lush and evocative, Ballester perfectly captures a mood of
intrigue and passion in this painting, a painting that would be every bit as
desirable even without the association with a classic film. Ballester was the
artist for several other Hayworth posters, but we think you'll agree when you
see this one, he really outdid himself here. Very scarce and highly desirable,
this is one of the standout pieces in this auction.

Svengali<http://www.ha.com/693*64338&type=prte-pr022908a> (Warner Brothers,
1931). Spanish One Sheet (27.5" X 39.5"):
ESTIMATE: $10,000 - $15,000
Svengali was one of John Barrymore's most memorable films, and art director
Anton Grot certainly does it justice with his bizarre and compelling poster
art, part Cubism and part German Expressionism, all combined to make a
terrific, and unforgettable, image. Born in Poland, Grot designed the posters
for Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s Robin Hood and The Thief of Bagdad, and was the
head of Warner Brothers' art department from 1927 to 1948. This movie was so
influential that the word "svengali" has entered our language, meaning someone
who exerts an almost hypnotic influence over another, typically with evil
intent. With a minimum of color, Grot perfectly conveys the twisted mind of
Svengali, wonderfully brought to life by Barrymore. This one will stay with you
for quite some time after you see it.

London After Midnight<http://www.ha.com/693*64557&type=prte-pr022908a> (MGM,
1927). Pre-War Belgian (24.5" X 33.5"):
ESTIMATE: $8,000 - $12,000
One of the greatest film actors of all time was Lon Chaney, the renowned "Man
of a 1,000 Faces." Of all his great films, including The Hunchback of Notre
Dame, The Phantom of the Opera, Tell it to the Marines, Shadows, and so many
more, perhaps none is more intriguing than London After Midnight, one of the
most famous "lost" films in the history of the cinema. In this collaboration
with director Todd Browning, Chaney plays a police detective trying to solve a
very cold murder case. To do so, he adopts the disguise of a vampire to try and
flush out the culprit! Surviving stills and images give us a look at Chaney's
vampire make-up - might he have done something similar had he lived to play
Dracula? - but the film itself is elusive. As hard to find is paper from this
great lost film, and we're pleased to offer a spectacular stone litho Belgian
poster featuring Chaney. This is a beautiful image from a hard-to-find film,
and anyone considering bidding on this one should bear in mind that another
poster from this picture may not turn up for quite some time. In addition,
we're also offering five lobby cards from this movie, four of which picture
Chaney, as well as a wonderful assortment of material from some of his other
films. Don't miss out on your chance to add some great Chaney material to your
collection.

Salome<http://www.ha.com/693*64992&type=prte-pr022908a> (Fox, 1918). French
Grande (47" X 63"):
ESTIMATE: $4,000 - $6,000
Another sadly lost film is Theda Bara's Salome, represented here by a beautiful
French Grande with a lovely image of the screen's original "vamp." Bara was an
intriguing figure in the early days of cinema, and it can be difficult at this
late date to separate the facts of her life from the fictions spread by eager
studio publicists. What is sure, however, is that she had a smoldering screen
presence, which is perfectly captured on this gorgeous poster. If it's
exceptional imagery you're after, you won't want to miss this rare piece.

The Passion of Joan of Arc<http://www.ha.com/693*65243&type=prte-pr022908a>
(Gaumont, 1928). French Poster (96" X 126"):
ESTIMATE: $25,000 - $35,000

The Passion of Joan of Arc<http://www.ha.com/693*65244&type=prte-pr022908a>
(Gaumont, 1928). French Double Grande (63" X 93"):
ESTIMATE: $20,000 - $30,000
Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, this stunning drama presents the final days in
the life of the French martyr and Christian saint, Joan of Arc, beginning with
her trial for heresy and following her through her imprisonment and eventual
execution by fire. Due to the high degree of technical accuracy insisted upon
by Dreyer, the film takes on an almost documentary quality as it presents
Joan's "passion" in a way that is as erotic as it is spiritual. These massive
posters present striking and dramatic imagery that is seldom seen, but which
perfectly convey the confusion and isolation that Joan must have felt in her
final days, when it seemed that the entire world was against her. These
country-of-origin posters are exceedingly rare, and may never be offered again
at public auction. Make sure you take a look at these before it's too late.
