Last night I watched a 1080i hidef feed of Hitchcock's THE BIRDS. I can tell you that I DISTINCTLY remember seeing this film at the Jefferson Theater in Beaumont, Texas in '63 and being impressed with how grainy and unattractive it was. This was not untypical of Universal pictures at that time, which often times would opt for cheap color labbing. I can remember many Universal film
that had this look.

Not so, the negative, apparently. Bright clear and sharp. The film has always been problematic for me, but this time I did not miss the humor and the unmistakable hint of environmentalism in the Daphne DuMaurier story.

I recommend MGM HD for this kind of fun.
