hey doug,

i have wondered about this, as well.

simply asked... if someone has bought a rare poster, lets say, from a universal or paramount film from the 1920's or 30's, does the new owner of that poster have the right to print & sell reproduced images and make money from these repros? or does the studio, who commissioned the poster originally, own those rights to this day? is there an infringement of any kind?

to use your example, does Stephen Fisher make the money from the sales of the 41x41 Frankenstein repro of the 6 sheet?

No doubt and probably has more than what we can imagine.

This leads to something else I've been wondering...I've seen many images of posters that auction houses have sold as in many cases being posters of one of a kind. Are these images being sold by the auction houses to companies to be reproduced or are these images being copied of he internet and books?

Some examples of late, (so far only 11x17's) Bride of Frankenstein D style 1sh. and Snow White 40x60. I've even noticed that Stephen Fishler's, Frankenstein 6sh. is now copied as a 41x41 poster for sale...true not copied as a 6sh., but maybe sometime in the near future.

Which leads to, who owns the right to sell or copy an individual poster image? Does this belong to an auction house...does it belong to a seller or the new buyer of the original poster being copied? Or does everyone have the right to copy or steal an image for profit?

Surely most intentions may be if you can't own the original this is your chance to own a copy, but with today's opportunist, I can see more and more fakes hitting the market and burning the poster field.

I have always felt that Ebay should not allow reproductions in the same categories as original lobby cards and posters especially some dealers in repros are really cagey about how they describe their wares so as not to label them reprints or reproductions. This inevitably leads to fraud. Does anyone else agree? FRANC
