Agree with classifying tape as repair, not restoration.
On the linen backing issue, I'm probably somewhere between two camps.
Well, I want to enjoy them, framed and on the wall.
3 or 6 sht it's a no brainer for me.
Or large French for that matter.
I'm slightly less inclined to automatically back anything than I was
say 5 years ago, and I'm more comfortable with signs of age,
(character), than I used to be.
Bought more smaller format rolled pieces lately, and it's easy with
those, no real need to back.
Folds, I could live with and would be ok with having something float
mounted with folds apparent, but it's not ideal.
If it's that rare, and in such unusually good condition, then fine,
possibly wrong to back it.
But generally, I don't really want the responsibility of something so
pristine and rare that one kink to a corner would reduce an important
piece from M to NM.
Have a stone mint rolled Mean Streets Strausfeld quad.
In a way, I'd rather have one in slightly worse condition, that way it
could be backed with a clear conscience, easily framed, no worry about
the framer or me causing some tiny imperfection.
I don't want the responsibility of museum pieces. Older paper, say
40's or earlier that's been in my hands is usually pretty delicate,
poor quality paper with high acid content, and if it's really that
rare, what?
De-acidify, fold up again, put in conservation storage and never let
it see that light of day again. Except to once a year, put gloves on,
and nervously take it out to enjoy looking at it?
I'm not that serious about it, and it's not how I think posters should
be enjoyed.
Since I've found established sellers to be honest about flaws when
asked details, not an issue to me if a piece is backed. Hold it up to
the light, and you know what you've got.
The choice between say a mint unbacked Out of the Past I sht, or an
excellent backed example, give me the latter, I'd rather have more
change and less headache.
Cheers,
Rich
