Friday afternoon we decided to evacuate. The radar just looked too bad.

I will say that the message to Houstonians that were not in the specific zip
codes with mandatory evacuation orders was mixed/confusing. At the time we
left, the general message was 'stay put'. I could understand that given the
timing of our departure, but there was also never a window previous to that
when there was a recommendation to leave for non-coastal areas. When we got
on the freeway, it was very easy driving until we got about 10 miles west of
Katy (western suburb of Houston) and then it jammed up for about 30
minutes. It was fairly chaotic, with people jumping in and out of the
shoulders and a few cars stranded on the side of the road.

With all of that, it only took us about 4 hours to get to Round Rock (north
of Austin). However, I will say that it was pretty damned stupid for
Houston to not open contraflow lanes (reverse direction of the opposing side
of the freeways), as they should have allowed anyone who wanted to get out
to get out. This seemed like an artificial justification of their stay put
order (i.e., if everyone leaves it will be too jammed up because we didn't
open contraflow).

Like Kirby said, the most we got here in Round Rock was a strong breeze
yesterday. No rain.

I have been scouring the web today looking for information about our area.
I do know this: Brennan's restaurant, a landmark in Houston for 43 years,
burned down -- and that is directly across the street from our apartment.
I'm glad we missed that since it burned right when the hurricane was getting
strong downtown. It would have been pretty scary to watch and decide if we
should stay and risk burning or go out into the night and risk being blow
away. I can't find much on our area, only a few photos on flickr of central
Houston and it looks pretty bad. I just hope our place is relatively OK and
that posterdemic's holdings haven't become a heck of a lot rarer.
