Major bummer. Some immediate reactions:

1) The chances of getting the stuff back are slim and none (and slim is on a
bus out of town). The guy who did this has almost surely hocked them for his
latest fix or whatever, and the police there are like the Keystone Kops
(especially on cases like this). My strong advice is to replace the missing
items ASAP. That way you are "made whole" and the only loss is cash, and
nothing more. Pretend you had a really bad poker session, and then
completely move on!

2) Two words: security system. It is not a guarantee, but it is really worth
having. And don't leave without turning it on, even if you are just going
for some smokes and will be right back.

3) Consider renting in a free standing building, if possible. An awful lot
of break-ins happen this way (remember the great Edward G movie where the
crooks rent the luggage store next to the bank so they can break in, but
they do so well selling luggage they change their mind!).

I have had similar experiences over the years, and I know just how
incredibly depressing it can be (the first time I had my apartment broken
into in Vegas 32 years ago I just had to move out ASAP, because I couldn't
shake the feeling they might return, and it was the right thing to do).
Best of luck in swiftly putting this behind you.
