The anti-Nazi theme of CASABLANCA would have made it a particularly interesting export in that context. No offense intended to anyone, but, just as an historical observation, there was a joke frequently told among Americans traveling in Austria and Germany in that era: Q: What's the difference between Germans and Austrians? A: The Germans WERE Nazis. (I was born in Vienna, of American parents, and heard the joke from my parents years later.) Also, in 1949 was not the classic it is today, it was just 'another' movie. It took another three years for CASABLANCA to be shown in Germany (1952) and the German poster only has a large portrait of Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart is NOT on the poster! In 1952, Ingrid Bergman was already a big star with German audiences, while Bogart was still a rather unknown B-movie actor.
