That same source says "imply" and "infer" can be used interchangeably. Eventually, thanks to such reference works which base meaning on common mis-usage as well as usage, any word will be able to be defined in any way. And since "Wikipedia" has replaced the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" as THE most used and most accurate encyclopedia, eventually people will believe just about anything that is repeated often enough (excuse me while I go and inflate all the data in MY Wikipedia entry).
