Phil
a wonderful little posting.
But it has to be said that those inhabiting the colonies have completely
dropped the Queens English and do not use:
Apples and Pears
Pen and Ink
Sky Rocket
Gregory Pecks
Bottle and Glass
I mean there must have been some perplexing moments when at the end of the
original film The Italian Job those less educated in the art of the
vernacular and the use of elecution listening to the dulcet tones of Michael
caine
and the rest when you are told in song form about the Self Preservation
Society...you should put on your dicky dirt and your peckham rye, comb your
barnet fair, put your plates of meat right on the seat, those who are out in
the colonies must have had a few confusing moments.
It must be said and we must thank those particularly in the Antibodean
climbs who have kept the old saxon word Bollocks alive. This is a peculiarly
English word and can really only be said in a UK accent whether it is from
Scotland, Wales, Ireland and any of the English dialects. It must be said
Australians and some South Africans can get away with using this word, however
it is a word that has been dropped from the American day to day use of the
language and if pressed it has to be said it does not quite sound right
said by American and I will add Canadian people.
Bollocks is a word that must be said by those who have the more clipped
vowels and less rounded consonants of those across the pond.
It must be said much as the films are a pile of tosh, The Austin Powers
films have certainly broadened the use of the Queens English in the US, even
though Mick Myers is using a psuedo UK accent.
It als has to be noted that a few US Television shows have picked up and
are now using the other well used Saxon word Wanker. This was first seen to
be used by Phil Collins in an episode of Miami Vice, however it has been
noticed that some US actors and actresses are now using the term most
noticiably and wonderfully by Maura Tierney in ER, she made the word sound so
erotic...it sends shivers down your back bone.
Here endeth todays lesson.
