Hello
I think what this thread needs is a good dose of (youngish) blood and
reality. Forget Susan Boyle now and beat the rest of the pack by a
few months. Who listens to Kelly Clarkson? The joke is on anybody
who thinks this is real talent and (insert favourite deity/celebrity
here) help us if the Martians invade and hold these examples up as
Earth's premium cultural exports. What has happened to our tastes?
Are we really that lazy?
Please, dear world, avert your gaze from these shows and invest your
time and money supporting actually talented singers and songwriters
rather than glitzed-up amateurs doing poorly executed covers of songs
by, often, talented and forgotten people. Disregard the outcomes
and the fickle fancies and support people who are worth investing in
and need it badly at this time in the music industry. There is a ton
of talent out there but you have to dig a bit and realize that it is
not going to get to you as easily as your cable set-up and exposure
on today's commercial radio is also pathetic and near nil for great
talent and congested with crap, just like the current cinema climate.
If you must meet me halfway, go with the new Camera Obscura album as
they're Scottish and fantastic. I am available as a tutor in the
field of challenging and rewarding contemporary music but I do not
come cheap.
Yours for the asking,
Michael Greenwood

the dance group, Diversity, is a flash in the pan act (i just
watched them and the final results clip on youtube).. and will be
forgotten about in 3-6 months. because of the world wide attention
Boyle received, (and talk about pressure), along with a pending
recording contract, her name and voice will live on long after the
50-100 members of Diversity have gone their separate ways.

Bruce, I couldn't agree with you more! She may have been
coached. I understand she has serious learning disabilities and
apparently broke down a little recently under the pressure at some
hotel in London. I noticed in some of the clips I saw of her
during verbal exchanges with judges on the show, she acted a tiny
bit like a nervous teen-ager rather than a nervous 47-year-old.
But I thought she was extremely gracious when the winner was
announced. And while I didn't hear the winning group perform, it
would be difficult to convince me that they were better than Susan.
Susan didn't really lose, however. She made more of a splash
around the world than anyone has on that show. And I believe
Simon Cowell is giving her a recording contract with his record
company. I for one can't wait to buy her first CD. Happy summer
to all MOPOers! Judith

Subject: [MOPO] OT: Susan Boyle losing
Is it just me, or did anyone else think Susan Boyle conducted
herself really nicely during losing? I liked how she handled
herself before, during and after her last performance, and when
they announced the winner. It was almost as though someone had
coached her in exactly what to say and do.
And the winners left me cold. They remind me of those guys
(Stomp?) who make music with trash can lids. A little of that goes
a long way with me.
Bruce
