Bruce, I do want to thank you for the plug for my auctions - that was me you were trying to hint at when you mentioned "if only there were any auctions where you paid no buyer's premium at all" correct? As not only do I have no buyer's premium, but I only charge a flat 15% commission, not some sliding scale where the fees can climb up to 75% and average 35-40%.
But of course I think Rich (and many others) do "get it". The bottom line for a buyer is it doesn't matter if there is a 0%, 1%, 28%, or 1872% buyer's premium. The bottom line is what the purchaser actually pays out of pocket for the poster. Figure out what you are happy paying and adjust your bid according to the buyer's premium (or lack thereof). If I am willing to spend $50 on a poster it doesn't matter (to me as the buyer) whether I bid $50 with you, $4 with the auction house that has the 1250% premium, or $40 with the one that has a 25% premium. The only one that should care about that is the consignor, as it is directly affecting the bottom line that he/she receives for their item. _____ From: MoPo List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 11:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] When is buyer's premium too high? You guys just don't get it. By having a buyers premium, they "do not hit the consignor with all of the fees!" Imagine if the consignor had to pay the 22% or 28%, on top of the 15% commission, and on top of the photo fees, and the insurance fees, and the catalog fees. This way, they share the pain with the buyer, and everyone pays less. Oh, if only there were any auctions where you paid no buyers premiums at all! I'll kick in the extra 5%" No.. you instead bid a number lower than you previously would have and the final sale to the consignor is less for the buyer's side.. it shouldn't make any difference what the premium is. If you were willing to pay $1000 total before, you're still only willing to pay $1000 Rich ps Doug.. pics are coming to you shortly At 05:58 PM 6/11/2009, Douglas Ball wrote: I thought buyer's premium @ 15% was just too damn high, but looking at Julien's auction is now 28% and Bonham's, 22%. When is enough going to be enough? Ebay is starting to look good again!
