We must be near the same age, because I remember the show in the same way.

My dad used to watch shows like these with me and tell me who had been big
stars in the 1920s and 1930s in movies. I really liked Charles Farrell's
voice and manner, and it was hard to imagine him as a young dashing leading
man.

I had forgotten about that tongue trill until you reminded me, but you are
right, it WAS super distinctive, and I can easily recall it!
