I’m another keen proponent of recycling where practical. It cuts down on
waste and keeps postage costs lower. Overall, I make a slight loss on
postage once PayPal fees are taken into account, so if it can be done without
compromising the strength and quality of packaging then why not? Through the
years I’ve accumulated a load of heavy-duty materials from such
conscientious packagers as Bruce, Rich, and even Captain Movie Poster’s
arch-nemesis
Ruthless Rick Ryan (Rick uses good tubes) amongst many others. If I can’t
recycle, I feel bad. Then I have to go into the forest and hug some trees.
Much more of a danger to the innocent movie poster is some of the brand
new packaging material given away by some shipping companies, especially when
cannibalized to movie poster proportions. The triangular tubes that bend
in the middle, the self-adhesive strips on envelopes and packages that stick
to everything, the pre-cut folds that, well, fold - in all the wrong
places. Some of these things are usable when suitably reinforced, but
personally
I tend to stay away.
Incidentally, one trick that most sellers seem to miss out on when
assembling flat packages is to use the corrugation/grain of the card to the
best
advantage. People almost always put pieces of card together with the grain
all going in one direction, causing an inherent weakness along the lines.
Not always a problem if the card is strong enough, but just by positioning 2
pieces of card, so the grain of one is at right angles to the grain of the
other, instantly increases the strength. Voila, no more bent poster angst!

P.S. “Pre-recycle” – Bruce I like it – I’ll have to run that one past my
other half – she is currently working on recycling policy for local
government.
