I don't know if it is true, but many years ago, I read that the movie was
originally simply a monster movie, because one of the guys had an ape suit.
But when he got it out of storage, he found the head was ruined, so someone
turned up with a diving helmet, and he turned into "Robot Monster"!

If it is not true, I would rather not know, because sometimes the legend is
better than the truth (as in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence).
