Bruce must not have posted that to the group.
but I would only re-iterate what Kenwick says as he pretty much covered it correctly.

there is one thing though
I think I am far more connected to the comic hobby than Bruce is today - even though I don't pay lots of attention to it anymore
I do not recall ever hearing that CGC missed a coupon cut or missing page.
not saying it can't happen if someone is not paying attention when grading. I've just not heard of any such claim yet

Bruce asked: But how many items are NEVER unslabbed? If you break open the Action #1, does not its value go down by hundreds of thousands? with most books this may or may not be correct depending on the situation, however this would not happen with the Action #1s slabbed or not, these issues would be worth the same today because they would just be re-slabbed. Slabs can be replaced if broken. They can also be regraded if requested. Slab replacement however may not necessitate re-grading as long as the book - such as the action #1s have been previously graded & are identified as those issues (not difficult) and so the slab would just be replaced.

concerning what JR said about forgeries
while I have discussed the possibility of covers being forged, I don't know how anyone would be able to forge a complete golden age comic book and the 2 copies of Action #1 that sold are longtime known copies in the hobby anyway.

I have never heard of such, but a man in your position in the collecting world has probably heard a lot of stories.

Technically, I'm sure it does... I was just saying that I strongly feel these recent million-plus realized prices were due to the fact they were CGC graded. As to whether the buyer wanted condition-guaranteed product for resale, or their own personal reading pleasure, goes both ways. So it will never be unslabbed, and if there are any hidden defects, they will never be seen.

You can always open it to enjoy, and send it back for re-grade later down the road.... pay the fee again, though$!$!$!

But of course, no one EVER cheats anyone at a grading service.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't put it past them, but I feel that the worst you'll get out them most of the time is a half-point grade fluctuation here and there, depending on the submitter (my personal opinion) But on the other hand, some of the guys who work there surely work for fairly low wages, and could they not be tempted to cheat for some serious coin?

I'll say again and again, the fees are worth it for the preservation alone, regardless of the final grade.
