And there I was thinking that you could get any better than Stone Mint. 25 levels..... one for every pinhole. .5 of a level for a pinhole that has successfully had its pushed back paper finessed into an almost pinhole.
Yet again, I am reminded of the Mark Twain quote..., "A specialist is just some damn fool from outta town". I rather like Dale Dilts's comment that basically said people want to pay to be told something is okay rather than learn about the "hobby" they are supposed to be so interested in. If everyone (well, just about everyone, including some real pros) were fooled by the Universal fakes, and anything like these were ever improved upon and slabbed.... and some poor sod buys one and discovers it's a fake, where does the onus lie (or is that lay, I can never get that right). Wait, don't auction houses have a standard caveat emptor? So they are covered. What if the specialist who gave the card the Gem Mint grading is no longer with the grading company, and really was just some damn fool from outta town? And Ted, seasoned pros don't think very much about this at all... i.e. the falling value in star collectability. It's a fact of life. Some might get a nostalgia hike along the way.... but I think I had it brought home to me what "modern collectors" are all about. I said to one avid poster collector that day Marlon Brando died... Gee, hard to believe Marlon Brando's dead.... and they just looked at me. Did not have a clue who Brando was. Having said that, the world economy is screwed, and Dave Lieberman aside, all dealers worldwide are seeing a shrinkage in what people used to pay for stuff. As for Chan's Rita card.... I long ago realised that with eBay if you set an opening bid at 99 cents, $9.99 or $999.99 or whatever, that what you are saying is that that amount is what you will be able to live with if there is one bidder and that's what you get. I'm sure lots of us know people who thought they could "do eBay" as efficiently as Bruce did in his prime when on eBay, and several other sellers who were onselling consignments and therefor did not have an investment in what they were selling, and ended up losing significantly because they had either overpaid for their items to start with, or thought that they would automatically get a run of bids. eBay hasn't been like that for a long time.... just like at the MOPO posts from sellers say... Hey folks take a look at all my stuff that doesn't have a bid yet. I had an email from eBay this week saying I could have 2 weeks free auction style listings starting at any price and up to 100 items, just had to pay the FVFs. I'm sure all you eBay sellers did. It's their dead time of year. They know they are on the nose, and more to the point, they know the economy is REALLY on the nose.... with more eau de ass to come.
