I don't know that she was the best choice for Dominique Francon in the
Fountainhead, but she WAS sleeping with Cooper, and that helped her onscreen
performance.

There are lots of male actors who are uniformly excellent in everything they
do, but not nearly as many female ones, and Neal was one of the best. The
story of her stroke and super messed up private life is fascinating too.

If you haven't seen her in The Homecoming (the pilot for The Waltons, where
she plays the mother, and the kids are there, but the father basically
isn't) then I highly recommend seeking it out, as it is one of the handful
of best TV movies ever made.
