I think I'll put on "Auntie Mame" tonight-- for the 457th time! I always see something new! And, unless Angela Lansbury is around, forget about the musical. The Lawrence & Lee original is simply perfect! And so is the great Rosalind Russell.. Joe B in NOLA-- wishing he was in Beekman Place, Manhattan, in late 1929! I didn't want to say it as I am from the south and "we" are always trying to pass the buck on these things--- but you are100% correct! By the way, I've always craved to play the preacher, father of the "hero's" girlfriend and performed brilliantly by Claude Akins in the film. In the play, his harangueing "sermon" in the town square is one of the most electrifying moments in 50s US drama..and that's saying something!! Interestingly, the play was co-authored by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee (no relation to the General, I believe). Their other "big hit" was, of all things, the play "Auntie Mame." The conversion of our society into evolution deniers and school boards like the one in Texas forcing through such an agenda as "Intelligent Design" into our schools shows that we have not progressed as a society in some very important ways. I'm constantly telling people that our political struggles are like a war between religion and intelligence. But it isn't just about Southern states. This is going on all over America and the dialogue is more virulent than ever.
