Thanks for the response Bruce! It is comforting to know that you’ve come
across other posters like this from the same time period. I guess the
copyright wouldn’t have lapsed until the 60s so it wouldn’t have been in the
public domain until then. That would then make sense for it to be from the
1938 re-release… which from Heritage sounds like might have been more
successful than the original release. I don’t know of any other theatrical
releases for White Zombie other than those two early ones (1932 and 1938).

I didn’t buy it as an investment so I don’t mind if it’s not worth a bundle.
I just liked the image and figured I would never be able to afford any other
original paper for the film anyway. Besides, I only spend $62 on it… I’m
actually pretty thrilled knowing it is likely from such an early release.
>From the auction description I figured it was from the 70s, maybe 60s tops.

Thanks again for your help all!

P.S. So the “Other Company” is actually a printing company? I wasn’t quite
sure from Todd’s response… you learn something new every day I guess!

Harry

It's likely from the 1938 re-release, because this coincides with the heyday
of the "other company" type companies.

I'd say it's surely not the "other company", Leader Press, or Woolever Press
(looks unlike those, and the last two wrote their name on almost all they
did).

We have sold several posters just like this on other titles of the 1930s and
1940s, so this is not the only poster they did.

Odd posters like these rarely command big bucks, except when they is an
uninformed new collector on the scene.

Thanks Todd… that is definitely helpful! I don’t believe it to be trimmed
either as, one more thing I forgot to mention, there are pinholes in the
corners (about where you would expect them). If it had been trimmed I
assume those would probably be lost or at least much close to the edges.

As for the “other” company printing… are you referring to something like
“Globe Poster Corp.” or “Woolever Press”? I have an old Jumbo WC for The
Scarlet Empress from Globe
(http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/1080/scarletempressfront.jpg) that was
from the original 1934 release, but used (and re-used) in small theaters
throughout West Virginia. Also, Heritage states that the 1932 United
Artists release for White Zombie was somewhat lackluster. When it was
re-released in 1938 it was done independently. There are of course NSS
posters (and lobbies) for the 1938RR (without the UA logo), but there are
also “other” printings as well like this one from Woolever
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=633
<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=633&Lot_No=28596>
&Lot_No=28596.

Is it possible to have paper inspected or dated? I’m not sure it would be
worth the trouble or cost for this particular poster, but it sure would be
nice to know. Thanks again and please everyone, keep the information coming
if you have any!

Harry,

This is an "other" company printed poster by an independent printer and
obviously not by the studio(United Artists).
Was printed on yellow stock paper and since it's 27x41, I'm sure it's the
original size and not trimmed.
Even with the risque artwork, it's very possible it's from the 1930's or
1940's. Doesn't look to be as late as a 60's poster.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Todd

Has anyone ever seen this White Zombie 1-sheet before?

Full Photo: http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/3875/10431969.jpg

Original Auction Photo:

Close-up Photo (silkscreen?):
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7973/wzcloseup.jpg

Here are the particulars…

    * Paper measures a full 27"x41"

    * There are no borders (all white you see is the linen it is mounted on)

    * Folds are very straight, look like machine folds

    * But, the vertical fold is slightly off center -- left half measures 13
5/8", right half measures 13 3/8" (not sure if that means anything)

    * Printed on matte paper, not glossy

    * Paper is yellow all the way through (I checked the back)

    * The paper is thin, but has a nice texture to it... you can see some of
the fibers if you look closely at the yellow parts

    * Printing looks like single color… maybe screen print? (see close-up of
woman's face above)

    * Regardless, definitely not computer or offset printed

    * No printer or artist info or fine print text whatsoever

Given the rather risqué artwork and the fact that White Zombie is a public
domain film… over at APF we were thinking it was maybe printed locally for a
50s or 60s screening. Here is a link to the APF thread:
http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,1263.0.html

Have any of you ever come across this poster before? Any help in
identifying it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
