Channing,
I just did some Google surfing to try and figure out anything about the logo.
I found an MGM historian's writing about the 5 lions that have been used over
the course of the studio's history. Regarding the short lived logo, it appears
it was only used 3 times including 2001: a space odyssey. So now we know
two of three MGM titles the logo was used for

Enter “Leo”, whose reign began in 1957 and despite a very brief period between
1966-68, is still our mascot to the present day. During those two brief years
the “medallion” or “stylized” logo was introduced, used on only three films,
the most well known is “2001: A Space Odyssey” in 1968.

Cannot find anything regarding Saul Bass's involvement.
