I just did a bit of research and see that that "modernized Leo" logo
also on the poster for NETWORK from 1976. The mystery continues.

hi all
further to the conversation about the 1966-1968 mgm medalion logo
that we had in october, i just passed my framed Saul Bass "The Human
Factor" 1sh and saw the medallion logo features on it. on a a film
made 12 years after the logo had been phased out. i didn't believe
that Bass had been involved in the logo, but if it appears on one of
his posters so randomly then perhaps he was. either that, or it's a
remarkable, coincidental blunder by someone at the Bass studio.

Channing,
I just did some Google surfing to try and figure out anything about
the logo. I found an MGM historian's writing about the 5 lions that
have been used over the course of the studio's history. Regarding
the short lived logo, it appears it was only used 3 times including
2001: a space odyssey. So now we know two of three MGM titles
the logo was used for
Enter “Leo”, whose reign began in 1957 and despite a very brief
period between 1966-68, is still our mascot to the present day.
During those two brief years the “medallion” or “stylized” logo was
introduced, used on only three films, the most well known is “2001:
A Space Odyssey” in 1968.
Cannot find anything regarding Saul Bass's involvement.

I noticed the groovy 1968 MGM logo on the poster. This is also
seen on several other posters and I believe on the credits for
2001. From what I seem to recall, this modernized version of Leo
the Lion was designed by Saul Bass. Is that true or does someone
on MOPO know?

see a rare version of Eastwood's thrilling WWII epic from 1968.
