I understand why many auctions have reserves, and I think it is great that
some auctions have started posting what the reserves are.

But I am not understanding the reason behind waiting until after there has
been a bunch of bidding to post the reserve. Why wait until a set date,
instead of just posting them when the auction goes online? Is it to see what
bids are placed, so that the reserve can be at least equal to the highest
bid to that point? And can a reserve be over the estimate?
