Makes no sense to me, either, escpecially in the online auction format.

It's different ina room with sweaty bodies and auction fever ... and the skill 
of the auctioneer to get something started.

If an item has a reserve, just start the auction with the minimum bid being the 
reserve.

It strikes me that online auctions simply inherited all the traditions of the 
live auction format. They are quite different animals. really.

  I understand why many auctions have reserves, and I think it is great that 
some auctions have started posting what the reserves are.

  But I am not understanding the reason behind waiting until after there has 
been a bunch of bidding to post the reserve. Why wait until a set date, instead 
of just posting them when the auction goes online? Is it to see what bids are 
placed, so that the reserve can be at least equal to the highest bid to that 
point? And can a reserve be over the estimate?
