Makes no sense to me, either, escpecially in the online auction format. It's different ina room with sweaty bodies and auction fever ... and the skill of the auctioneer to get something started.
If an item has a reserve, just start the auction with the minimum bid being the reserve. It strikes me that online auctions simply inherited all the traditions of the live auction format.
