Sabine Bethmann was fired right as the film moved into production. I think
it was by or as a result of Stanley Kubrick being hired at the very last
moment to direct.

Notice this still being auctioned by emovieposter.com. The notes on the
back of the
still annouce Sabina Bethman as the lead actress in Spartacus. Jean
Simmons is not
even listed among the cast. SPARTACUS devotees may know the story behind
this.
This still is dated 1959.
Maybe she was replaced?
