Yep, hired by Douglas (seemingly primarily on looks), they struggled
with acting lessons and softening of the German accent, and by the
time Kubrick was on it her time was up.
They'd apparently originally considered Simmons but discounted her
initially because it went against the idea of casting the British
actors as Romans.
Don't know why, but in connection with this title it always seems to
be "Sabina".

on the back of the
still annouce Sabina Bethman as the lead actress in Spartacus.
Jean Simmons is not
even listed among the cast. SPARTACUS devotees may know the story
behind this.
This still is dated 1959.
Maybe she was replaced?
