Many of you know I've been a collector of Raymond Chandler all my adult life.
I've collected his first appearances in the 1930s pulps (I only need one more)
I have some first editions (some are way too expensive and I doubt
I'll ever get them)
and of course, I have very many posters
I've been closing in on all the one sheets, inserts, lobby cards and
everything else for years. However, unfortunately, some are very
expensive items and I'm missing a number of those. Double Indemnity,
Blue Dahlia and Big Sleep are the problem titles or course, seeing as
all are fairly expensive. I have been the underbidder on a number of
items here. I lost out on the Double Indemnity 1sh maybe 3 years ago
in Bruce's auctions. 3sheet as well. Blue Dahlia I've been an
underbidder on so many posters it's really sickening, not that I
don't have a bunch from the title - I have 5-6 lobby cards, a damaged
WC, that re-issue Quad Heritage sold a few months back.. but the 1
sheet, half sheet and insert just keep escaping my grasp.
Murder My Sweet, or as it is known by it's book title -Farewell My
Lovely - is my favorite Chandler book and not surprisingly, it's also
my favorite Chandler movie. I have most of the paper on the title (I
still need an insert, the 3 sheet, window card, 30x40 and 6
sheet-which I doubt exists. I have everything else USA). On that
title, I'd sure like to find the UK Quad which is the only paper that
has the original title.
Interestingly, Strangers on a Train I've never been able to get very
much on, although the insert looks back at me while I'm at my office desk.
Double Indemnity and the Big Sleep are the only titles on which I
have absolutely nothing (I'm not talking about Robert Mitchum). I
have no US paper on either title and I don't even have non-US paper
on them (not interested in US re-issues on these)
here is the pre-1951 title list
Falcon Takes Over
Time to Kill
Double Indemnity*
And Now Tomorrow
Murder My Sweet
the Unseen
Blue Dahlia*
Big Sleep*
Lady in the Lake
Brasher Doubloon
Strangers on a Train*
my goal is to have 1 sheets for each title framed and displayed in a
single area. so I guess I'm going to have to start thinking about
turning the cash over for the 4 I need (starred titles) and of
course, Dahlia is the most expensive of them.
One thing I can say is each time I get one more, I definitely get a
thrill and a smile. I picked up the Falcon 1sh today when an ebay
seller who has had one for 3 years in his store finally decided to
take my offer of $200 (Thank you to him I say) and I finally got the
US Lady in the Lake from Bruce a few weeks back (It's surprising how
tough that poster was to find), although I do have foreign posters
(like the original release Japanese poster and the Aussie).
Too bad when the Falcon Takes Over insert was on ebay a couple weeks
ago, I got busy working and forgot to set up a snipe >:-o
soooooo.... I guess that means I'm still looking for some stuff
those are the titles and I collect all paper from pressbooks to
posters of any size. Stills are way at the bottom of the list, though
I will buy them if I can buy a small stack from any titles. 1 still
at a time is too much trouble, and I collect posters of any country
I do need someone who can furnish a high-res image of a Blue Dahlia
WC so I can get my properly restored (it's on linen and missing the
bottom border area)
anyone with a reasonable price is welcome to query me on my wants for
the above titles
thanks
Rich
