Recently I read the memoir DEAN AND ME which was written by Jerry Lewis several years ago. It is endearing, I must say, but also betrays the enormously outsized ego of Jerry Lewis. It is also rather unabashedly addresses the adoration that Lewis felt for his (seemingly) Cold Fish partner Dean Martin. Martin's story is also interesting, and I would recommend DINO: LIVING HIGH IN THE DIRTY BUSINESS OF DREAMS (1992) by the very talented writer Nick Tosches.
It is difficult to overestimate the swiftness with which the two rose from obscurity to superstardom in the late 1940s. And superstars they were. Amazing, since most of those Martin and Lewis movies have dated very badly. Not so much the solo Lewis films. I did once sell a 24 sheet for ARTISTS AND MODELS, a film that the two of them made when they were seriously at outs. Great poster.
