that's not the take I get from it Bruce.
I think it's great that they did $1.3mil in a single sale and though it isn't the same as when they were doing $2.5 mil (or more) I completely recognize the reasons for it

1) the absence of a major player who during a period of nearly uncontrolled activity drove up prices to new all time highs for very many items. Prices that are not going to be beat for a long time

2) unlike past auctions, the most expensive item sold this time around was $48,000 (Sean won it). There were no 100k, 200k or 600k items for bidding in this sale

3) "it's the economy stupid". Yes indeed, the economy has yet to return to pre-recession levels (and it won't for years to come. like maybe 10-20 years in some ways) and as a result, everyone is suffering (except those with boatloads of cash and who never suffer).

I think Grey is as aware of these issues as anyone and he and Bruce Carteron (as well as all the elves) put together a fine sale and did very well with it

Myself, in buying the Double Indemnity wc, I made a "great buy" but not because of the final bid - because of the happiness I feel in winning the poster!! I'm 100% positive Sean feels the same way about the Werewolf of London insert he is busily framing up for his wall and there can be no doubt that had that piece come up for sale in 2007, it would have sold for more due to the presence of the aforementioned high roller who is not currently present for bidding (which could be one more reason Sean feels so happy about it)

were there bargains in the sale? YES. Was I lucky enough to win any of them.. the answer is a resounding NO. as a matter of fact, the other 2 items I had bid on I did not win and I bid a little higher than market price for both of them (I was underbidder both times). These 2 posters I lost were not cheap at 4k+ & 5k+ and while some people think that the WC I won was cheap at $956, I think it was only a light discount on the item.

Moving forward, I think we're going to be seeing reports of 2 $1million+ auctions either before the end of the year or early next year after Sean, Peter & Ken get the Movie Poster Exchange going. Heritage will have some stiff competition for those super-high dollar bidders, and we collectors will have yet another regular auction to enjoy (for those who don't know all of them, there will be Heritage, MPE, Bruce and myself at MPB. There's room for everyone. I think it's great!)

I notice an interesting difference in this thread (and a similar one on allposterforum). In the past, people would post about the skyhigh results, oohing and aahing over the insane prices. Now there are mostly posts from dealers and collectors talking about the great buys they made.

Actually, it was mostly estate items and misc. junque; I told my grandpa that I wanted the boxes of comics and books that were going for $1 each.

I left the auction empty handed, but I did notice the people and the action, which left a heckuva impression.

Hey, Allen -
What the heck did you buy at auction back then?
A Creature 3S for $2!

I agree with all of Neil's post, most especially this part. However I'll add, as a Las Vegas resident & poker player I understand the need for a house player to start a game (this is where the casino has an employee who sits in a game to make enough players to begin playing where they may not otherwise be a table for those ready to play) and so I understand that starting the action is comparable to this. But I know that the auctioneer is present, he announces his presence before any auction in accordance with the laws in whichever state they are licensed, so it is neither a surprise, nor completely objectionable
