Yuletide Greetings MoPo'ers,
Have been working on duel projects of both finishing up finding some uber rare
Marx Brothers still and poster/pressbook images and have a Sanity Claus wish
list of below items, which include two silent films from 1925--one with Harpo
Marx and the other with Herbert (Zeppo.) I have some pretty cool unpublished
photos from a 1961 Christmas party at Groucho Marx's where Gloria Stuart is
there with Harpo (sans wig of course) and his wife Susan. Haven't even shown
Bill Marx (Harpo's son) yet, but will do in person after I develop all the
negatives--the estate gets first publishing rights, but Bill has been with me
on this project since it's inception ten years ago, so he's all on board with
both those images and the ones he and his sister Minnie Marx-Eagle provided.
The Wizard of Oz project has gained speed and I am vigorously searching and
acquiring some really rare images for a proposal to Warner Brothers. I have
absolutely zero guarantee or way of knowing if they will publish it or not, but
my best project (the "Memories of a Munchkin") was the exact same way, so I am
not afraid in the slightest. Just seeking credit for myself and any collectors
and organizations who help unless specifically deciding to remain anonymous.
Talking to the small Oz author circle as well to see if anyone wishes to
collaborate as I always prefer that to trying to go solo.
I have created a list to show the other OZ titles that I am seeking images from
as I know it is fun to see Oliver Hardy as the Tin Woodsman in the 1925, but
does anyone have an image of Hal Roach in 1914 as the "Cowardly Lion"? Now,
that would be pretty nifty.
So here are my two lists:
1. Any leads on the following Marx Brothers film posters/pressbooks/etc:
a. "The Cocoanuts", (Paramount, 1929): There is no record of this on
microfiche or reproduction of any kind at the Academy.
b. "Animal Crackers" (Paramount, 1930); same, though I have an English
version, which I think is workable.
c. "Too Many Kisses" (Paramount, 1925); have a SINGLE reproduction page
from the Academy that even mentions Harpo Marx (from stage fame) by Name, but
would love to see the rest.
d. "A Kiss in the Dark" (Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, 1925) Zeppo Marx
was in this as "Herbert Marx."
e. "Humorisk" (Caravel Comedy Co., 1921) lost short film.
2. Anyone know of of any rare "Wizard of Oz" images? Maybe a pressbook from the
silent films?
a. The Larry Semon/Oliver Hardy (Chadwick, 1925) silent film.
b. or the 1910 Bebe Daniels/Robert Z. Leonard (Selig Pictures.)
c. and 1914 "The Patchwork Girl of Oz" (Oz film manufacturing company)
where Hal Roach played the Cowardly Lion...
d. the 1902 stage production with Fred Stone and David Montgomery.
e. The 1933 Film Laboratories of Canada animated film that was prevented
from being released.
f. Any Grauman's Chinese theatre or Capitol Theatre (NYC)
exterior/interior marquee/lobby stills?
Best,
-daniel...
