Yes Rich, Bruce also mentioned it on an earlier sale of that style which
made me curious too. The globe design on the poster does differ in that it
has curved horizontal lines, whereas on Bass' title sequence (and press ad)
it has straight lines. It also looks a bit too "cleaned up" overall.
However, since the motif is so blatantly similar, along with a fairly
characteristic red background, and an Advise-&-Consent-style disembodied
hand/briefcase, and since Bass also worked on the press campaign, it's hard to
believe
he would have let the studio get away with it without some input. After all,
he must have had considerable clout by then. Unless they paid him off, or
the contract was loose enough to allow it.
It's an interesting one to be sure. Perhaps Neil J has some other
information or campaign material that might shed some light.

Interesting info contained in emovieposter listing. Looks like this one
could be joining Birdman Of Alcatraz, West Side Story etc.

"Important Added Info: Note that a Saul Bass expert tells us that Bass did
NOT do the art for this poster! Other sites credit Saul Bass as the
artist, but this may be due to the fact that he did the title sequence for the
film and the art does look similar to his style. If anyone knows more about
this, please _e-mail us_

  and we will
post it here."

Assume, strictly speaking it would be "after Bass", Illustration does
indeed follow title sequence design very closely.
