Funny, my wife and I totally started picking the story apart before we went to sleep... Like I said you can worry about the story after you come down from the ride. !!!SPOILER!!! I thought the death of the daughter was way too abrupt. We decided that it almost felt like well that they stopped and said "we can't just make a fancy Smithsonian imax film... hmmm yep lets have someone be dead or something"; I can see them sitting around a table trying to figure that out. The emotional connection was higher than all of Bullock's performance when the third space walker's family photo floated by... After that connection was not made with Bullock's character the rest was just a fun ride in an uncomfortable seat... and like Wim said about an hour in you lost some of the connection because you knew that they couldn't kill her off. I also started thinking that isn't there some restriction of re-entry angles etc... Some of the science seemed questionable at the end and did anyone else notice Bullock's hair never moved... I could go on... Still a heck of a visual experience - wish they would have spent at least 10 minutes on the story though. JMO... For the first hour it was really nice, looked beautiful and for the first time I had the feeling that the IMAX 3D worked. It gave great depth and stilness. Really appreciate the director's reconciliation with the simple plot, not overelaborating it and sticking to the 90 minute-format that should be enough for every character's emotional turmoil. However from the moment Bullock is alone, time is running out for the story-line and even the clever trick with The Kowalski-vision does not stop the inevitable decline into unbelievability. The ending is silly (pretty sure there's a director's cut in the offing) and the musical score towards the ending unforgivably loud and predictable. In the end a pleasurable watch and one and a half thumbs up.
