Bruce,

The New York Times has a searchable archive available to subscribers.  For the
tighter among us you can also search it and get a "preview" of the results to
get an idea if anything is there.  Also, if they ran a review you can usually
read the entire thing for free.

In the meantime you can use Google's News Archive.  Their advanced search is
"being improved" at the moment so is unavailable, you can still access their
newspaper archives via:

http://news.google.com/newspapers

Although it is unsortable and extremely time consuming to slog through for all
but the most obsessive compulsive among us.

I'm working on "Forbidden Adventure" right now and it's been an enormous help.

I checked, and sadly, none of the Universal Flash Gordon re-release posters
have litho numbers, so that is a dead end. The way to surely date exactly when
in the 1940s those movies were re-released would be to check newspaper archives
to see when ads ran for them, but that would be very time-consuming, UNLESS
there was a searchable online archive from a major newspaper.

Does anyone know if there IS a searchable online archive from a major newspaper
that goes back to the 1920s or 1930s? If there is, I would be willing to pay to
access it, to be able to answer questions like these. Please let me know if
there is.
