I've never watched the whole thing all the way through. I have a low
threshold for tolerating the maudlin and SOM is uber-maudlin. Christopher
Plummer, who I met briefly many years ago, used to famously refer to it as
"The Sound of Mucus" because he disliked it, and especially his role in it,
so much. In recent years, though, he seems to have changed his mind and is
more charitable in his assessment.

I grew up in southern California, about a block from the old 20th Century
Fox lot before it fully moved to Century City. There was a wooden fence all
around the lot and it was plastered with the Sound of Music one sheets,
literally hundreds of them. When the movie came to the theater, I remember
whole families getting dressed up in their Sunday best and going to see the
movie. It was an event back in the day. A movie where you were given a
program and it had an intermission, just like a stage play. That's all
anyone talked about at school for months. When I did finally get to see it,
it was a beautifully shot film and, of course for me being a big musicals
fan, the music was wonderful. Everyone loved Julie Andrews. I knew she was
Mary Poppins, but no resemblance to my young eyes. I did love the movie,
but I also loved Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, so go figure!! It seemed
like it was in the movie theater for a good 2 years solid and, for the time,
was the largest grossing picture of all time passing Gone with the Wind, I
believe, and then came Star Wars....I just remember all the news was that it
saved 20th Century Fox after the huge losses from Cleopatra.

books.google.co.uk

(FAQ). The Sound of Music FAQ is a comprehensive, encyclopedia-like
reference to the world's most popular movie musical. Rather than focusing on
the often-told stories of this classic movie, this book looks at the 1965
Oscar-winner in relation to its source, including the true von Trapp family
story and the Broadway musical from which it was derived. The Sound of Music
FAQ explores such facts and trivia as the movie's phenomenal original run in
cinemas, during which it dominated the box office for a staggering amount of
time and became the highest grossing movie of the 1960s and of all time; its
long and varied life on home video and primetime television; the bestselling
soundtrack and many other related recordings; information behind the
stunning Austrian locations; the critical feedback; the many stage revivals;
and the continuing references, homages, reunions, and tributes related to it
over the many decades since its release.
