Hi Tom, the market is continuously changing even year to year now. Here’s a quick overall explanation of how a film is distributed nowadays.
The standard right now for smaller non-studio films is to release day and date which means releasing the film in a limited number of theaters and releasing the Film digitally through specific platforms. Those platforms are usually Transactional VOD which are your local cable providers where you can rent/buy the movie through your set-top box, it also includes your online VOD outlets like iTunes, Amazon, X-Box, etc. The next Window usually is anywhere from 30-60 days later which is Physical Release which includes DVD and Blu-Ray. Redbox rentals can either be before or after the physical release depending on the size of the title. Next window after that are varied but most are doing Pay-TV which are limited to Showtime, HBO, Stars and Epix. If you are lucky you may be able to also exploit your Cable TV window which is basically defined as everything else that’s not included in your Local Free TV channels. Next window is your Subscription VOD which is the streaming services like Netflix and Hulu+. Most films won’t get a lot of sales in the next windows which is your Local Free TV channels. There are a lot of other smaller revenue streams like AVOD which is Advertised based VOD and similar like VOD streams but the above pretty much lays out distribution in nutshell. As for getting a distributor on board it’s best to have them hire a Producers Rep or Agent/Manager to help navigate the waters of film distribution. They will help find a Domestic Distributor to handle all of the above windows and help find a International Sales Agent to help sell the international territories. Most distributors and sales agents will only deal with professionals who know how these things work as opposed to a random filmmaker that usually hasn’t a clue. That’s unfortunately just the reality of the marketplace right now. All the best. Sincerely, Paul W.
