Happy to help, Paul. This issue confused me as well and I did wonder whether
the more prevalent quads WITHOUT the "U" - were repros. And I probably
would've continued to have some doubts had it not been for Tracks Ltd. stepping
in (without realizing it) - putting the matter to rest when it verified the
authenticity of its "ragged" quads from the same owner with family ties to the
Stafford printing company. Tracks Ltd. has handled so much material that its
one of the few trusted retailers of Beatle items in the U.K. -d.

You rock! This is exactly the information I was looking for. Should get it next
week so I guess the measurements will be the tell-tale sign.

All the best.

Subject: Re: The Beatles - British Quad HELP! question

I researched this issue almost two years ago and here's what I turned up. If
you don't want to read the long-form info I wrote to another colleague - the
short version is "Help!" quads with the "U" rating are first release 1965 - but
oddly - they are second printings to correct an error in the first run by
Stafford and Company Ltd. - which had errantly left off the "U" in its rush to
ship posters of this guaranteed hit to UA / UK / exhibitors.

To me personally, these second printing quads with the "U" - are more desired
and command more $$$ - because they're harder to find. Parenthetically -
commercial reprints DO NOT HAVE THE "U" - and most are smaller than 30x40. I
know that sounds counter-intuitive - but it's because the reprints were based
on the more prevalent first printing theatrical quads without the "U." I've
never seen the third version mentioned, i.e., "a U enclosed in a circle" with
"minor cast names" replaced with a “Seven New Songs” Label and a “Printed by
Leonard Ripley & Co, LTD, London” stamp "on the lower right." I believe this
is a third printing given the marketing changes that befell "Help!" - akin to
the different poster versions of "Yellow Submarine" in 1968 whereby listing
the number of songs felt crucial to draw in fans.

In sum, the two most important markers to determine the authenticity of "Help!"
quads - have nothing to do with the "U" rating.
1) dimensions must be 30 x 40 or GREATER
2) paper must be folded and not rolled

Second printing "U" rating "Help!" BQ - (more desired and more $$$).

---------------------------------------------------September
2017---------------------------------------------------
Research about the Help! UK quad rating anomaly (see images below).

* Last week (9 September 2017) - Tracks Ltd. in the U.K. - authenticated and
posted two vintage Beatle BQs from the SAME consignor for sale (see images
below).

* I consider Tracks Ltd. - (which like eMoviePoster here in the U.S. - offers a
LIFETIME guarantee) - along with Frank Caiazzo of NJ, Perry Cox of AZ, Thomas
Vanghele of NYC, Mark Lewisohn of the UK and Bruce Spizer of AZ - to be the
best historians and / or authenticators of Beatles' signatures and memorabilia
on earth - as all six (6) have been consulted by corporations, museums and
auction houses worldwide, e.g., London, Tokyo, New York, Paris, etc.

* While Tracks Ltd. makes no reference about the absence of ratings letter "U"
for its "Help!" BQ - both "Help!" and "A Hard Day's Night" quads are genuine
and are not reprints. They are both in the same ragged condition - and - more
crucially - their provenance is sourced to the same consignor who has with
familial links to Stafford and Company Limited - the printers of many BQs in
the 1960s.

* Neither quad offered by Tracks is a repro and this supports my long-held
belief that "Help!" BQs without the "U" - represent a first printing anomaly
from the first release in 1965. Their greater prevalence reflects "Help!'s"
status as an slam-dunk blockbuster - and these first printings without the "U"
- went out quickly in great numbers - before a corrected second printing
commenced with the "U" rating added. These second printings with the "U" are
more scarce, yet are ALSO from the first 1965 release. "Help!" was expected to
be a greater hit than "A Hard Day's Night" and their greater availability as
vintage posters are reflected accordingly.

* I believe a hand examination of paper-stock is still required to distinguish
30 x 40 originals on vintage paper - from the smaller-sized commercial reprints
on glossy stock which appeared in the 1980s. Poster dimensions are CRITICAL.
Known commercial repros are rolled - and are ALL 27 x 39 or SMALLER.

* The provenance of the "Help!" quad I once owned - (since sold long ago) - was
from the Eddy Block collection sold by Christie's South Kensington in 1997. It
too, had NO "U" rating. (The back story about how I acquired it and why I sold
it - is below the next section which specifically addresses the posting by
Tracks Ltd. of "Help!" and "A Hard Day's Night" vintage BQs.)

* NOTE THAT Tracks Ltd.'s MARKETING LINKS BELOW MIGHT BE DEAD if both posters
have been sold.

====================================================================================

Meanwhile, here's my personal backstory about Beatle quads:

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/3446/0Q8FXd.jpg
[https://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/3446/0Q8FXd.jpg]

* I got into a huge fight with Sotheby's in December 1996 over a "A Hard Day's
Night" British quad "issued in 1964." I was not able to measure its poster
before bidding on it IN PERSON - during one of its rare showroom sales in L.A.
This quad HAD a "U" rating - BUT LATER - I discovered it was 27 x 39. Tony
Nourmand, who was then a rival consultant for Christie's in London - told me he
knew the quad I had bought from Sotheby's was a repro from the 80s. So - armed
with Tony's knowledge, I went to Sotheby's to complain, who in turn, wanted to
cancel the sale and refund my money.

* Noting major travel and related expenses I incurred to attend this auction
and to purchase and pick-up this poster in person - I rejected Sotheby's offer.
I wanted the poster REPLACED. Sotheby's refused. At the time - the big
auction houses were under investigation for many underhanded dealings - over
which - as a young militant consumer activist - I concede I took full advantage.

* I threatened Sotheby's executives on York Ave. that I would unleash global
media coverage - (as I have done with other corporations in the past) - about
general auction practices in New York, L.A. and London - which I was well aware
of through informers. The bosses in NYC relented in mid-March 1997 - and
replaced the repro Hard Day's Night BQ with an original, e.g., a "straight
exchange" from one of Sotheby's "trusted" consignors. (After I received it - I
turned around and consigned it to The Beatles Shop on Mathew St. in Liverpool
in late 1997. Why? Well, continue reading below.)

* During my fight with Sotheby's - Tony Nourmand reassured me that his upcoming
May 1997 sale of quads through Christie's in London - were not only "absolutely
100% genuine" - but also they were, he said in superior condition - with
provenance sourced to the Eddy Block Collection. Thus - it was through Tony
Nourmand - and his relationship with Christie's - that on May 19, 1997 - that I
bid and won the quads from "Help!" and "A Hard Day's Night" offered in his
sale. The "Help!" quad I won - had NO "U" rating - and the "A Hard Day's
Night" quad - did.

* To be fair, as a strictly "personal preference" - if I, David Kusumoto, was
avidly collecting again - I'd prefer chasing quads of "Help!" WITH the "U"
rating - because they're harder to find. Until I was able to figure it out - I
had it errantly in my head that the "ratings marker" was critically important
as a first printing flag for vintage posters - in relation to commercial
reprints available in the U.S. which appear without them. But with UK
commercial reprints - I saw many with the "U" (or with stricter ratings)
printed on - albeit available in smaller sizes, which to me meant different
rules had to be applied.

Best, David.

Subject: The Beatles - British Quad HELP! question

Ok, who is the resident Beatles expert here? I came across a British Quad for
The Beatles HELP! that I picked it up at (what I hope was) a good price. As
this is out of my Stanley Kubrick wheelhouse I’ve looked for prices using the
usual suspects but they are all over the place based on the different versions.
It appears there are 3 different versions sold in the past by both Heritage and
emovieposter as well as a few other reputable websites selling it currently at
retail.

One version has a “U” next to the dot in the exclamation point. Another version
does not have the U at all. And another version has a U enclosed in a circle
and has the minor cast names replaced with a “Seven New Songs” Label and a
“Printed by Leonard Ripley & Co, LTD, London” Stamp on the lower right.

Can someone shed some light on if all of these are true versions and the order
these were released and the value ranking of each?

All the best.

Sincerely,

Paul W. Hazen
