I had a colleague with an old iMac whose screen also went to black, but everything else was still working. We just plugged a spare monitor into the back and continued working as before, but using the external display.
Yes, the current iMacs all use USB-C ports, but spend less than $20 and you get an adapter which turns one of the USB-C ports into an ethernet plus three USB-A ports. Spend another $40 or less and you can add an external CD/DVD reader/writer. Your SuperDrive will not work with the adapter as they require a higher current than a standard USB port provides. Are you sure your old iMac is from 2006? They usually don’t go beyond 10.7.6. You said your’s is running High Sierra which is 10.13 and that would put your iMac as no later than 2009.
