I keep hearing that Fifties horror/sci-fi prices are softening. Then I get hammered (brutally outbid) by people with more enthusiasm and deeper pockets than myself at Bruce's auctions. (Heritage prices do seem to be a bit lower these days, however.)
I don't know what to believe. I do keep seeing crazy prices on those pieces on eBay. I seriously doubt anyone's going to pay 9K for an "Amazing Colossal Man" 3 sheet, for example.
But ya never know. I saw a "Forbidden Planet" one sheet in 1981 selling for $300. "No one will EVER pay that!", I harrumphed.
What do I know?

I wonder if the current numbers reflect a dwindling interest in poster collecting in general... or if there is just less enthusiasm for poster art from the 1930s - 1960s.

Hi Bruce,

MoPo membership peaked at just over 500 in the early 2000’s. Up until July 1999, MoPo was linked to a Usenet newsgroup (remember those?) via a posting gateway to bit.listserv.movie.memorablia. That helped grow our member numbers in the very early years.

By March 2006 we had dropped to about 435 members. Numbers went below 400 for the first time around 2008. For most of the 2010’s we held steady in the 300’s, but numbers have trickled down in the last couple of years to 250—where we are today.

There are some people who aren’t actually subscribed, but read posts via the Mail Archive. I don’t know how many that might be, but likely it’s not a large number.

For those not familiar, the searchable archive (which goes back to 2004) is here:

Congratulations! Out of curiosity, roughly was the peak membership, and roughly when was that?

Fellow MoPo’ers:

Time is moving way too fast….MoPo marks its 29th birthday today. That’s amazing longevity for an Internet group.

February 24, 1995 was the day of the first official MoPo post via the American University listserv.

As is my custom, here’s my annual recognition of those 11 first-day MoPo members: Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Jeff Static (using AOL name Static555), Cindy Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, and myself. Michael, Rob and Evan are still with the group.

Our subscriber numbers aren’t what they once were, but I’ll take quality over quantity any day. 😊

Thanks again to American University for keeping the listserv up and running and thanks to all of you for being here.
