Tony,

After the Republicans' concerted assault on USPS, why are you surprised? They
want to get rid of it altogether. Underfunded, understaffed spells
what-we-have-now.

And if they can get rid of it, they will. USPS was never intended to be a
business. It was intended to be a service for the USA taxpayers, which is what
it was for 200 + years. Our buddy AI reports:

Unique Mandate:
The Postal Service is the only entity, public or private, required to pre-fund
retiree health benefits, meaning it must set aside funds now to cover future
healthcare costs for retirees.
PAEA of 2006:
The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) of 2006 mandated the USPS
to create a fund to cover post-retirement health care costs 75 years into the
future.
Financial Burden:
This pre-funding requirement has placed a significant financial burden on the
Postal Service, leading to financial instability and missed payments.
USPS Fairness Act:
The USPS Fairness Act, which passed in 2022, eliminated the pre-funding
requirement for retiree health benefits.
No other federal agency or private sector business prefunds its retirement
benefits.
