Consider the following: Pattern I: year 1: Hi 80 Lo 40 Ave 60 Swing 40 year 2: Hi 84 Lo 60 Ave 72 Swing 24 year 3: Hi 88 Lo 80 Ave 84 Swing 8 Pattern II: year 1: Hi 60 Lo 40 Ave 50 Swing 20 year 2: Hi 70 Lo 30 Ave 50 Swing 40 year 3: Hi 80 Lo 20 Ave 50 Swing 60 In pattern I you have warming but decreasing temperature swing. In pattern II you have no warming (or cooling) on average but (dynamic) increasing temperature swing.
