Ron, that's very interesting. I wonder if that's
what some of the residents mean when they say nobody
cares. I do know for some it does. If we confront
them, put hands on at times to stop them from harming
themselves, in time, they respect you more often.
They feel safer. Also, if we, as staff, can stand up
to them and not show fear, they feel safer too. I've
heard residents talk about how they don't want people
to be afraid of them. They want people to be able to
come up to them and talk, not feel weird, and when
their having a bad day, such as they are yelling,
wanting to kill themselves, and are being physically
aggressive they want to see somebody go through the
event with them. They have lost some sense of control
and in hindsight they don't want to always be like
this, and if certain staff are able to face them head
on and not back down, then they see somebody not
running away from them but being tough enough to be
near them. So when it's all said and done they know
that person, the staff, was able to see them at their
worst and they, the staff, don't run away and not want
to be around them. This is why when these kinds of
facilities have residents going through tougher times
when staff turn-overs is at a high rate. Anyways, I
see this fitting in somehow with what you said about
confrontation and caring.
thanks.
