Talking of metasouls... a Hindu school of thought (Samkhya) has a metaphysical perspective that is somewhat close to Pirsig's, but much more inclusive. The Samkhyans see existence (=*kshetra *or *Prakriti *= the field or nature) as being composed of three elements (*gunas),* that of luminosity/purity, activity/passion and inertia/ignorance (*sattwa*, *rajas*, *tamas*). On a grand scale, humans are sattwic, all the lower orders of life are rajasic, and inorganic matter is tamasic. But, consciousness (*atma* or *Purusha*) is the eternal onlooker, completely free from the fundamental qualities of nature.
This equates to Pirsig's division of DQ and SQ. There cannot be any "DQ patterns", because DQ is infinity/consciousness, it is attributeless; it cannot be seen because it is that by which everything is seen. Hence, the concept of metasoul isn't exactly accurate according to such metaphysics, because whatever perceived metasoul there may be is only a modification of the qualities of nature.
