Peter,

It is an acquired taste for sure. I have a group of friends/musicians in New
Orleans
who got me started on Beefheart. They would cover Beefheart tunes at
gigs and would have Tropical Hot Dog Night parties after Jazzfest where all
Beefheart was played all night.

I am still not that completely familiar with all of the tunes - not like
my friends are...they quote whole blocks of lyrics to each other.

One of the couples in this group had
My Head Is My Only House Unless it Rains as their wedding song
and myself and another friend made this wedding gift for them:

We made a black and white pinhole photograph of him wearing a suit with a
real
doll house stuck on his head holding an umbrella and framed it with the
lyrics and gave it to them. It was my friends' idea, but I am the
photographer
and had the darkroom and so on.

I too - don't like his paintings as well - though I've only seen them on the
internet. A little too raw for me and I just don't like the color
choices/compositions
that much - not really my palette - but I might like them better if I
saw them full size.

I love the visual imagery of two flamingo in a fruit fight though.
