Arlo said to dmb:
What's funny is he chastised you for seemingly implying that the number of
results on a google search meant anything, and yet to support his position he
links a string of names, as if that means anything... add to that his blindness
to even look a little bit further to see the bogus nature of this list. ...Its
this "logic" that makes him [Platt] blind to the hypocracy of condemning you
for "a list", then turning around and supplying "a list" as a legitimate
counter. YOUR list was "liberal", and so it can be dismissed and ridiculed as
preposterous, dubious logic. HIS list was "neoconservative" so it must be fair
and honest and legitimate.

dmb says:
Right. The thing is, the issue is not a battle of lists or even of political
bias. The important distinction here is the one between science and politics,
between peer reviewed data and vested financial interests. That's how this
debate got started. We're talking about the efforts by the current
administration to alter and supress information that threatens the profits of
giant corporations. The petition project is based on a paper that has not been
accepted by any scientific journal. It was written, in part, by a guy who has
nothing more than a BA in chemistry and involved no research. This simply can't
be compared to the work of atmospheric scientists who collect actual data. (The
National Center for Atmospheric Research, as it used to be called, is just up
the road in Boulder and my late, great father-in-law was friends with a lot of
these guys, so I tend to take this nonsense personally. He thought Al Gore's
book was substantially correct, by the way.) anyway, in terms of the MOQ, this
is a case of putting social level values over intellectual values (And over the
health and well-being of human beings). Besides being short-sighted and
downright stupid, it is wildly immoral. Bullshit like that thoroughly deserves
to be condemned. I'm not saying the argument is bogus because Platt is immoral,
I'm saying the argument itself is immoral. Big difference.
